St Louis Battlehawks vs DC Defenders
The DC Defenders have been nothing short of disappointing for two straight weeks, including being shut out in Week 4. Now they come home and hope to right the ship, but to do that Defender’s QB Cardale Jones will need to take some major steps up after two straight weeks of being benched in the 4th quarter in favor of backup Tyree Jackson. There isn’t any indication that the Defenders will be making a QB change on Sunday but at this time, Jones is just too tough to trust for my liking.
Terrible play is not just limited to the Quaterback as their Pass Catchers have not performed at a winning level either. Eli Rogers, Rashad Ross and DeAndre Thompkins on paper are the three of the most talented group of receivers in the league, but we haven’t seen any spark here since Week 3. Now they face the Battlehawks’ 2nd best passing defense.
Unless Jones and the pass catchers can get things going, I also don’t have a lot of faith in the DC running game. Despite near breakout performances by Nick Brossette in week 3, it was once again a backfield led by Donnel Pumphrey in Week 4 with Juhrell Pressley also seeing some usage. Again, unless Jones can get going in the air, teams will be keying in on the DC Running game which hasn’t been great now for 2 weeks. Yikes.
Meanwhile in St Louis’ Jordan Ta’amu came roaring back in week 4 completing 20 of 27 for 284 and a score. He also ran for 63 and threw a 2 point conversion. The DC Defense that was dominant in week 1 and 2 is no longer scaring me off Ta’amu and I’d expect another strong performance in Week 5 by the QB.
Remember this name – De’Mournay Pierson-El. Then remember to say Boom. Pierson-El took 5 targets for 71 yards and a score in week 4 and he will be a big time target for me in Week 5 against the faltering DC Defense who have been particularly susceptible over the middle of the field. The chemistry between QB and receiver should only continue to grow in Week 5 and I will have plenty of Ta’amu – Pierson-El stacks in my lineups.
St Louis’ running backs Matt Jones and Christine Michel look to be cleared for play and should be on your radar. The Defenders are dead last in the league against the run and both Jones and Michel will have solid opportunities in this game to perform. I also want to mention Keith Ford who had a strong performance in Week 4 that could lead him to see the field a little more – especially if St Louis puts this game out of hand.
My DFS Takeaways
It certainly could burn me but I just don’t see myself getting to any DC Defenders this week. Cardale Jones $9,000 just has not performed well over the last two weeks and that only hinders the rest of the offense too. They are at home, and anything can happen, but I’ll let them show me something before I go back there. If I was to play any Defender I don’t mind taking a shot on Rashad Ross $7,800 who has shown his chops on down the field throws in the past. Aside from that I likely will not be playing any DC Defenders.
Jordan Ta’amu $9,700 and De’Mornay Pierson-El $9,300 are my favorite stack on this slate and I think they will go overlooked a little with other similar team stacks on Saturday.
I also think the St Louis Backfield should be considered for your RB slot. Matt Jones $7,300, Christine Michel $5,200 and Keith Ford $4,400 all seem under priced for what they could do on the ground against the Defenders bottom ranked run defense.
