XFL Week 5 Draft King’s DFS Picks & Strategy

Seattle Dragons vs Houston Roughnecks

This game has a very interesting storyline developing for Seattle with their quarterback situation. Brandon Silvers started last week against the Battlehawks he was replaced by half time by backup BJ Daniels. Daniels had a strong showing for himself passing for 100 yards and a touchdown (and an interception) but what really stood out was Daniels ability to make things happen on the ground. Daniels ran for 84 yards including a 1 point conversion. What really makes this interesting is Coach Jim Zorn virtually saying both guys will get a shot at playing in week 5 – what the heck does that mean. It could burn me but it makes me want to stay away from the Seattle QBs altogether in my DFS lineups.

Meanwhile on the other side of this game the Roughnecks know who is running their show – PJ Walker who after a slow start went on a tear in week 4. 3 straight scoring drives including a fantastic touchdown to his quickly emerging Go To in Nick Holley. Walker later had a 76 yard scoring play as well with Blake Jackson. Coming into Week 5 against the second worst passing defense in the league, Walker carries a 12:2 Touchdown/Interception rate and he makes a very strong play at QB.

And what pass catcher to pair Walker with? My pick is Nick Holley who took 8 catches for 97 yards and a score in Week 4. Look for Walker to continue to build on his relationship with Nick Holley against Seattle.

Despite putting up a complete Dud in Week 4, I’d also look to go right back to the well with Houston’s Cam Phillips. WR Sammie Coates has already been ruled out for Saturday and the highly touted Khalil Lewis is carrying a questionable tag. Definitely keep an eye on Lewis’s status – but should he sit, I can easily see Cam Phillips getting back to the form that he showed in the first 3 weeks of the season. If we get news Lewis is going to play, I like him as well but I prefer Phillips. Also if you are multi entering, I wouldn’t mind taking a shot on Blake Jackson who had a great game last week here and there. If Coates and Lewis both sit, Jackson could be in line for extra targets.

While the Dragons QB situation is a bit of a mess, who they are targeting has not. Austin Proehl is slowly becoming a big star in the XFL. Proehl went 7 for 81 and a score and should have similar success in Week 5 against Houston who is giving up on average 225 through the air. After Proehl however the other Dragons to look at include Keenan Reynolds who saw the same amount of targets as Proehl did. Also Alonzo Moore who demonstrated his strong skills for run after the catch and making good use of limited targets in Week 4.

I am not sure this is the game to target a running back in. The Dragons employee a very evenly slit Committee approach – rotating between Kenneth Farrow, Trey Williams and Ja’Quan Gardner. Farrow is very scoring dependent which makes him difficult for me to roster in a main lineup, but I’ll have a share in multi entries. I overall prefer Williams who showed real dual threat upside in Week 4. The Dragons’ backs do have a great matchup on Saturday however with Houston being middle of the road defensively on the ground giving up over 100 yards per game.

For the Roughnecks the backfield really belongs to James Butler who had a decent showing in Week 4 but will likely not make my lineups in Week 5 as the Dragons who have been giving up only 2.5 yards per carry thus far.

My DFS Takeaways

Houston’s QB PJ Walker $12,000 is the most expensive quarterback on the slate and with good reason. His 12/2 TD to INT ratio is something I believe he will be building on and a stack with Nick Holley $7,100 may be popular, it comes with good reason. A way to be contrarian may also to be to stack Walker and Holley with Cam Phillips $11,500 who I don’t expect a lot of people to be on coming off of Phillips awful showing in Week 4. I expect a bounce back game from Phillips here.

Also keep an eye on Khalil Lewis’ status going into the game. With Sammie Coates already ruled out, Lewis could provide sneaky value as the #3 target for Walker.

If I am playing a Houston stack I’m running it back with Austin Proehl $8,000 who should garner a good amount of attention from whomever is under center. In fact that confusion at QB may cause many to stay away from Proehl which is fine by me! Play Austin Proehl in other words.
